The Landesfilmsammmlung.

Who We Are

The Landesfilmsammlung Baden-Wuerttemberg (LFS), a central film archive for the federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, was founded in 1998. Today, the collection obtains state funding via the Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Wuerttemberg (MFG) and the Department of Science, Research and Art (MWK). Our mandate to collect is determined by the state’s archival laws.

The LFS collects films from and about the federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. In addition, we file specimen copies of films funded by the MFG.

Starting in 2002, we have been able to collect more than 11.000 films from communal, church and state archives as well as personal and company archives, the major sources of our constantly growing collection.

This original footage is sought after not only for national, but also for international film productions. On top of that, we produce our own compilation films (available at www.filmreise.info).

What We Do

  • professional long-term archiving of our state’s culturally and historically valuable film documents

  • filing of specimen copies of films funded by the MFG

  • consulting for archives and individuals with regard to archiving and digitising of analogue footage

  • offers for amateur film makers as well as school and university students include events on the subjects of (amateur) film history and technical developments

  • showcasing of the state’s and its towns’ history to the people of Baden-Wuerttemberg in comprehensive, yet detailed compilation films

  • supplying national as well as international film productions with footage from our archives

  • making available historical footage for screenings and exhibitions such as www.leo-bw.de, an internet portal of the Landesarchiv Baden-Wuerttemberg

Our Collection

Corporate and municipal image films, advertising films and family films from all over the state are the main focus of our collection. The oldest film reel in our archives dates back to 1904, the latest video file was recorded last year.

What separates the LFS from other film archives is the large amount of amateur films ranging from the early days of the film era to our times. In our collection, you will find depictions of all areas of public and private life: economy and technology, fashion and advertising, children and leisure, farming and housekeeping, customs in and travels to countries far and near, humorous and unusual situations, but also film logs of soldiers of the Wehrmacht and recordings from the post-war period.

Our References

In recent years, our films have been used in a variety of domestic (ARD, ZDF, SWR, Teamworxx, etc.) and foreign (e.g., histodoc) documentary and feature films.

Research and Viewing

You can do research in our comprehensive database at Haus des Dokumentarfilms (HDF), the location of our archives in Stuttgart, which comprises over 8.000 films, or simply click here for a more concise online version of the database.

In addition, you can have a look at the footage right away at special viewing stations here at HDF. If you are too far away from Stuttgart, however, we would be glad to do the research for you and compile a DVD according to your request.
